CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA — A gross image of a dog being sick has gone viral and highlighted the dangers of letting your pooch eat chocolate.

The boxer named Sofia and another another unnamed dog were rushed to an emergency animal hospital last Christmas after eating more than a kilo of chocolate left under the Christmas tree by owner Daisy Roja, Metro reported.

The photo was posted to Facebook by the Greenbrier Emergency Animal Hospital in Virginia to warn owners not to let their dogs eat chocolate this festive season.

Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine that is toxic to dogs at doses of around 100 milligrams per kilogram of bodyweight and can be fatal. The darker the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains.

Symptoms of theobromine poisoning include diarrhea, seizures and vomiting.

After she produced her chocolate fountain, the hospital fed Sofia and the other dog activated charcoal to stop the toxins being absorbed. Both dogs made a complete recovery, the Mirror reported.
